On 20 June, ECHA officially adds Benzo[def]chrysene (CAS 50-32-8) to SVHC candidate list. The total number of substances on SVHC candidate list is now 169. To download the complete list in excel and learn more about how to comply with SVHC requirements, please click here.

Why Benzo[def]chrysene (CAS 50-32-8)?

Benzo[def]chrysene (CAS name: Benzo[a]pyrene, B[a]P) belongs to the substance group of Polycyclic Aromatic Hydrocarbons (PAHs) which are well-known to be hazardous for human health and the environment. Eight PAHs, including benzo[def]chrysene, have a harmonised classification as carcinogenic, mutagenic, and reprotoxic in the categories 1A, 1B, or 2 according to the CLP Regulation (EC 1272/2008).

8 PAHs including Benzo[a]pyrene are already restricted in tyres, children's articles and articles supplied to the general public (reference). Adding it to SVHC candidate list means that more products  such as chemicals, cosmetics and industrial products will be impacted.
